OUR WHY-

You can’t start a business without first understanding why you want to do such a crazy thing. You can’t start a business in this industry without being a little crazy so let me tell you OUR WHY. I have been in this industry for my entire life. I have seen the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between. Because, or despite, depending on your viewpoint, I have so much experience in this business, I decided now is my time. Why is it my time? It’s not an easy answer but *the* answer.

A few years ago, when I was in the leadership position I had, truthfully, I wasn’t mature enough for it. I never would have admitted it then but, five or so years later, I can easily admit it. I simply wasn’t mature enough and felt that I was owed more than I was. That ultimately led to my failure in that position and my departure from a job that was my dream job (at the time). I had plenty of time to harbor ill-will, and reasons to if I am still being honest, but after dispensing with those feelings, I had even more time to realize and admit with myself that I wanted too much too quickly and ultimately, I was responsible for what happened to me. That sucked to admit to myself and didn’t feel great typing out here on this blog but I promised OUR WHY and I am going to deliver it.

My next job was in skilled trades recruiting and staffing. It was awesome. The company I worked for had resources, drive, and market-share. It was fast-paced and results driven and perfect for my personality. I could start early in the morning, recruit tradespeople for specific jobs we had coming up, sell them on why we were better and why they’d be better for joining us and, eventually, I’d bring them aboard. My first four months in that job, I hired and placed (96) ninety-six Field Employees in the Hudson Valley and NYC. It was so much fun. My success in that role also led to the first of two promotions I had in that company. It also helped give me the confidence to introduce myself to, date, and eventually marry my wife. I loved that job.

When that job came to end, mostly due to Covid-19 and the restructuring that had to happen in the organization as a result, I took some time for me. I tried to figure out what I wanted to do next. What was going to make me happy? Had I been able to, Generational Modular may have started in 2020 but it wasn’t the right time. Ultimately though, it became obvious that it was the right time to come back to the industry I grew up in, developed a passion for, and left prematurely. In conversations with myself, it was apparent that my passion was still there and soon, it also became apparent that my skills and knowledge of the industry were too. I went to work for Custom Home Solutions/Modular Construction Services with the goals of making money and learning from one of the best in the industry. Christian taught me, in his own casual way, how to deal with clients, develop estimates, and be adaptable to the many different things we encounter daily in this business. I wasn’t as successful as I wanted to be while working for CHS but my time there was invaluable considering how much I learned about the client side of this business.

All of that brings us here today. Today I formally introduce to you Generational Modular Group, LLC. GMG was born after years of tinkering with a business plan stored in my brain and developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully run my own business. GMG may be one of the only businesses in this industry owned by someone who’s worked in a factory, in a factory sales department, factory management department, commercial construction, trades staffing and recruiting, and retail and commercial sales. I have, honestly, done it all in this industry and am ready to do it on my own now. Here’s OUR WHY: I’m ready. I have an amazing family. My wife is the support system I’ve always needed. My kids are great and provide a freedom from work that I’ve never had, and we just had a baby that is everything I have ever dreamed of. No better time to start this than right now because I wasn’t ready until right now.

To that end, let’s talk about what GMG is going to do and how. GMG is going to focus on the consulting and owner’s representation side of this business. Why? Because it’s the missing piece of the puzzle. There are a lot of very good builders in this industry. There are also a lot of very good factories in this industry. You know what there isn’t a lot of? Really good coordination between the two. It makes sense really. Both sides are independently owned and focus on their individual needs far more than the needs of the (often) one-off consumer. What if that consumer had an advocate that could help bridge the gap between the factory and the builder? What if that consumer had someone in their corner that could “speak the language” and help them better understand the entire process and all of the documents? Think about much better the process would go. Go to yelp or google and type in “Modular Home Reviews” right now. Read the negative comments and then apply the thinking I outlined above. Tell me that there isn’t a need for Owner’s Representation in our industry. You likely can’t. So, let’s take it a step further. Think about how much more successful the industry can be when there’s a company that can bridge the gap in Multi-family/commercial building. Contract disputes, service squabbles, and finger-pointing will all be reduced and there can be a much better understanding between parties from start to finish.

At the end of the day, this is a leap. It’s a genuine bet on myself and my abilities at a time when there’s a ton of uncertainty. If it weren’t for my wife, my children, and my own self-esteem, I don’t know that I’d make the leap right now but all three are strong and the outlook is even stronger. So, with that in mind, I’ll invite you to follow along and reach out when you think you have an opportunity for me. Our slogan is “Evolving from the Present to Build Better in the Future.” Help me do just that.
